Initiative vs Guilt: This psychological dilemma is
in effect in children between the ages of 3 and
5. Initiative is a step above autonomy where
children learn to make plans and carry out
tasks. Guilt is a result when a child is
severly criticized, prevented from imagination,
or curiousity is discouraged. Children with
this dilemma may become hesistant to act and
guilty by doing so.

 Autonomy vs Shame and Doubt: This psychological
dilemma is in effect in children between the
ages of 1 and 3. Autonomy has to do with a
childs’s self-control by performing actions for
themselves. Shame and doubt occurs when a child
is inable to control oneself (i.e. falling,
spilling, wetting, and other
“accidents”). Children that are
ridiculed or overprotected may become doubtful
of their abilities and shameful of their
actions.
